Meeting the Common Needs of Your Community

NSCA Request for Volunteers

Your Civic Association needs more volunteers. (Complete Form)

Your civic association is always in need of volunteers. The current slate of active board members is doing their best but they are volunteers with a finite number of hours can be dedicate toward working community issues. Like you they all have jobs, families, and other commitments that also require their time.

No prior experience or unique expertise is required for any of the positions nor do any of the positions require an excessive time commitment. The association conducts six board meetings and six general meetings each year.  The Secretary also sends out a few letters over the course of the year. The committee positions require someone to monitor State and County activity in their respective areas to identify issues which may impact our community. This usually entails attending a monthly Government meeting and periodic review of postings on the related Government website.

Other needs include:

Neighborhood Watch Program - An active and visible neighborhood watch is proven to deter crime in the community.  North Springfield has the oldest neighborhood watch program in Fairfax County, and we need your help now to keep this important tradition going!  Time commitment is as little as an hour or two once a year.  Volunteers may patrol on foot or bike or by car.  Training is provided.

Beautification – Tree lined streets are one of the attributes that makes North Springfield such a nice community to live in. The aesthetics of this appearance also helps sustain our property values. We successfully replaced about 30 trees on Leesville and they are all doing well. We would like to do the same on other streets as trees are lost to age and storms. We also maintain some of the common areas throughout the community. If you can help with a little pruning, mowing or clean-up from time to time please contact us.

Traffic Calming – Traffic volume and speed on Heming, Leesville, Ravensworth and Ferndale are a concern to many of our residences. We have had some stops signs installed to partially address this concern. Feedback from residents is that the stop signs have helped but speeding still persists in some areas. Another deterrent to speeding is to increase the fine to $200. This action requires a petition signed by xx percent of the residences on the street. We need volunteers willing to canvas the residents on the above named streets to determine if there is sufficient support to raise the fine for speeding on any of these streets.

RV and Boat Parking – In response to numerous complaints the legislature passed a law permitting residence to prohibit the parking of these vehicles on the street in their neighborhood. Once again, this action requires a petition signed by xx percent of the residences on the street. If this is a problem in the area where you live then we need volunteers willing to canvas their neighbors to determine if there is sufficient support to prohibit parking those vehicles on the street.
